Free Press Head Start for April 4

Good morning.

A winter storm warning is in effect for southern Manitoba, with a Colorado low expected to bring 15 to 25 cm of heavy snow between today and Thursday, with strong winds and visibility reductions due to blowing snow.

The Colorado low is set to hit southeastern Manitoba the hardest, bringing 20 to 25 centimetres. Winnipeg and the Red River Valley could see 10 to 15 centimetres and western Manitoba could receive five to 10 cm. Katie May has the story.

The Association of Manitoba Municipalities will host a provincial political leaders forum at its spring convention in Winnipeg. The event takes place today at 9:15 a.m. at the RBC Convention Centre, during the AMM convention that runs until April 5. Carol Sanders has a preview.

Voters in Wisconsin will elect a judge to the state Supreme Court, which will affect abortion access as well as the future of Republican-drawn legislative maps, voting rights and years of other Republican policies. The Associated Press reports.

The Winnipeg Jets host the Calgary Flames, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

On April 4, 1933: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the giant U.S. dirigible Akron came down in blustery weather off the coast of New Jersey, and was a wreck, according to a report from nearby German tanker. The Toronto Maple Leafs won a gruelling Stanley Cup semifinal against the Boston Bruins, 1-0, in what was the longest such game in history to that point, with 104 minutes and 46 seconds of overtime and lasting until 1:50 in the morning.
