On April 5, 1956: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitoba’s flood forecasting committee said Winnipeg could expect a Red River flood crest of 24 feet above datum, and possibly up to 30 feet above datum if weather conditions worsened. In Detroit, Mich., police broke up a mob of 300 people who were demonstrating against an African-American couple who had moved into an all-white neighbourhood; several stones were thrown, breaking two windows in the couple’s home.
