Free Press Head Start for April 7

Good morning.

The futures market pointed to another big drop for U.S. stock markets when trading begins this morning as investors continue to worry about U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs announced last week. The Canadian Press reports.

Justice department officials who looked into the accidental release of a man awaiting trial for manslaughter from Headingley jail in October did not conduct a thorough report as promised by the premier, the Free Press has learned. Erik Pindera has the story.

Today’s must-read

As fiddle music played for thousands who gathered at the Manitoba legislature Sunday to celebrate what it means to be Canadian, a dirty, torn U.S. flag pressed into the ground drew its own crowd of spectators.

Winnipegger Elijah Kirton, who brought the flag with him, began to jig on top of it. People quickly circled around, clapping and cheering — a reaction that might have seemed unbelievable not so long ago.

“I have this flag like this to show that the U.S. has trampled over us for so long and has disrespected us, especially their crappy president,” Kirton, who is Métis, said of U.S. President Donald Trump, who has imposed tariffs on Canada and floated the idea of the country becoming America’s 51st state. Malak Abas has the story.

On the bright side

Paula Moynihan says a pamphlet placed in her mailbox is responsible for how she’s spending part of her retirement.

It advertised ways to get involved at Oak Table, the Osborne Village drop-in centre operated by 1JustCity at Augustine United Church. The timing was fortuitous: Moynihan was wrapping up her career in social services and looking for somewhere to volunteer.

“It’s in my neighbourhood, and I just like working in my community and working with people, so I thought it would be a good fit for me,” she says. Aaron Epp has more here.

On this date

On April 7, 1928: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Richard E. Byrd’s Ford tri-motor monoplane made a successful test flight carrying 14 people from The Pas to Winnipeg; the “giant” aircraft was eyed for use in polar exploration. In Fouke, Ark., a 70-year-old woman and her brother were arrested on suspicion of having placed arsenic in a community well supplying water to a nearby sawmill camp.
