Carlton closure: Carlton Street is closed between York Avenue and Assiniboine Drive as officers investigate a motor vehicle crash, police said shortly after 6 a.m. Westbound Broadway between Hargrave and Edmonton streets is also shut down.
Roadway ribbon: The province’s first highway memorial sign for victims of impaired driving is being unveiled north of Winnipeg. MADD says the signs, which feature its red ribbon logo, are meant to educate about the dangers of impaired driving and memorialize the victims. Kevin Rollason reports. READ MORE

Remains returning: The presumed remains of U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War were being transported from South Korea to Hawaii today, where they will undergo forensic analysis to identify them. North Korea turned over the remains in 55 boxes last week.

On Aug. 1, 1928: The Manitoba Free Press reported that a Winnipeg bank messenger aided police in a North Dakota manhunt for a gang of bandits who had robbed him. Italian aviator Umberto Nobile, whose airship expedition to the North Pole had met with disaster when his craft crashed in May and was rescued more than a month later returned home to a cheering crowd of 200,000 in Rome. A “monster machine” airplane capable of carrying 60 passengers was being tested in New York, in hopes it would be able to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 20 hours. READ MORE
