On Aug. 1, 1944: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Canadian troops of the British 2nd Army opened a new attack at the eastern end of the swaying Normandy front. Russian and Polish troops attacked Praga, industrial suburb of Warsaw. German forces established a strong line of defence near Florence, Italy. In France, a French Resistance patrol cooperated with a Canadian Army unit to reduce a German strongpoint in the Caen suburb of Vaucelles to rubble, permitting Canadians to take the town. READ MORE
