A woman is suing Manitoba Public Insurance after it denied coverage for her twice-stolen vehicle, claiming the Crown corporation failed to tell her to have keys reprogrammed after the spare was pilfered in the first theft, reports Erik Pindera.

Three people were seriously injured Monday in a three-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway at what has become an infamous intersection following a fiery crash that killed 17 seniors in June.

Blue Hills RCMP said one of Monday’s victims was taken to a Winnipeg hospital while the other two were being treated at local hospitals after the crash at the Highway 5 junction at 4:45 pm. Read more.

On the bright side

Three years ago, the City of Winnipeg’s gardening team swapped its flower beds on the west side of city hall to welcome three sisters: squash, corn and beans. Originally planted in 2020 the gardens are sprouting their fourth edible harvest for the 2023 season. Cierra Bettens has the story on how the city has swapped floral beds for strawberries, tomatoes, beans, peas and herbs.

On Aug. 1, 1932: The Winnipeg Free Press reported a 21-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man had drowned in the Assiniboine River in separate incidents. A windstorm blew through Ogema, Sask., lifting cement foundation out of the local curling rink and caving in the west side of the building. Paraguay was brought to the verge of war with Bolivia after the government issued a decree for general mobilization.
