Asleep in a home on Shamattawa First Nation, Waylon Thomas was startled awake and then watched in horror as a bear clambered through the kitchen window — pausing for a moment before pouncing on him with its teeth bared.
Thomas, who fled from the house before being chased down and mauled, is now recovering from the attack that left him with bite marks and slashes across his back last week. Tyler Searle reports.

On the bright side
All three levels of government have teamed up to build a new playground and basketball court for kids in Winnipeg’s North End. The hope is the $602,000-project will give inner-city children a place to play and feel a sense of belonging. Community activist Sel Burrows said easily accessible recreation activities can keep kids out of trouble.
“One of the things I learned over the years is kids vote with their feet. If there’s good programming, they’ll show up en masse,” Burrows said. Jura McIlraith has the story.

On Aug. 1, 1963: The Winnipeg Free Press reported premier Duff Roblin appointed nine members to the Economic Consultative Board, a new board aimed at guiding and stimulating Manitoba’s future economic growth. Claudia McPherson, 17, had become the youngest person to ever swim in the English Channel and was set to return to St. James near the end of the month.
