Harris hits campaign trail: Kamala Harris, a U.S. senator for California, will make her first appearance with presidential candidate Joe Biden since he chose her to run for vice-president on the Democratic ticket. A campaign event is scheduled near Biden’s home in Delaware. READ MORE
Another summer sitting: The House of Commons will meet for the first of two August sittings. The Liberal government will face more questions about its decision to hand the administration of a student grant program to the WE Charity, but Justin Trudeau is on vacation and won’t be there. Scheer’s end nears: Andrew Scheer will rise in Parliament as the leader of the Opposition for what is likely the final time. It’s expected his replacement as Conservative leader will have been chosen before the House of Commons meets again later this month. READ MORE
Second testing site: A new COVID-19 testing site in Brandon will open later this morning at the Keystone Centre. Four new cases of the virus were announced Tuesday, three of which are in the health region that encompasses Brandon. READ MORE

Tornado’s aftermath

The tornado touched down Friday night 16 kilometres south of Virden.
‘I thought I was gonna die’: James Blacksmith of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation was injured when his vehicle was picked up by the tornado that touched down south of Virden on Friday. “It was dark and scary. All the windows blew out,” he said. “When it stopped moving, I was pinned inside, and the Jeep was upside down.” Jason Bell reports. READ MORE
Farmer faces financial struggle: Farmer Giovanni Colangelo said he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to financially recover from the tornado, which shredded grain bins and filled wheat fields with debris. Kyle Darbyson of the Brandon Sun reports. READ MORE

On Aug. 12, 1987: A Manitoba judge noted that using automated teller machines to steal from financial institutions was becoming the popular new crime of the 1980s. In Elma, high winds knocked over a garage and several trees and damaged at least one house. In Ottawa, the federal government introduced legislation that critics said would fine and jail church groups and lawyers helping refugees seek asylum in Canada. The federal justice minister dismissed concerns the Meech Lake Accord would diminish the rights of women.
