Poland has deployed the military to assist with cleanup after 10 tons of dead fish surfaced from the Oder River in what is being described as an “ecological catastrophe.”

Thousands of people in eastern Sudan are homeless after seasonal floods destroyed more than 2,500 homes in the area.

And firefighters from across Europe have begun arriving in France to assist in the fight against several wildfires in that country.

Manitoba has reopened appointment booking for monkeypox vaccinations after abruptly halting it earlier this week, but won’t reveal how much of the vaccine is on hand. Chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said vaccinations are expected to begin next week, and the province will report the number of doses administered on a weekly basis. Katie May reports.

On Aug. 12, 1952: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the city, in a presentation to the provincial municipal committee, argued the province should shoulder more of the costs for education, social services and roads, including at least 10 per cent of the city police budget. The chair of the city finance committee said city council had “sold the taxpayers down the river” by agreeing to a 7.5 per cent wage increase and a 40-hour week for civic employees. A three-and-a-half-year-old boy from Poplar Point drowned in a creek; his death was among seven reported accidents around the province that resulted in injury and the only fatal one.
