On Aug. 13, 1997: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Winnipeg police planned to crack down on the summer crime wave targeting the elderly, after three more seniors’ dwellings were hit by thieves, bringing the total to 20 within the last three days and 214 since June 15. Manitoba was starting to harvest thousands of dollars in taxes from people who ordered tobacco from an Ontario mail-order company. Cooking staff in Brandon prepared food for 2,100 as the city hosted the Canada Games.
