Stunning sweep continues: Taliban extremists have captured three more provincial capitals in Afghanistan, including that of Helmand province, where allied troops fought some of the bloodiest battles in the past 20 years. The Taliban is in control of two of the country’s three largest cities. Canada is sending special forces to help evacuate its embassy in Kabul, which could be under siege in the weeks ahead. Display home deja vu: The transportation of a display home through the streets of Winnipeg and beyond is the subject of a provincial investigation. Trees were illegally cut down before the initial move Saturday, and the City of Winnipeg now says street signs were damaged by the house. On Aug. 13, 1953: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Western Canada was set to harvest its third consecutive bumper wheat crop, estimating 542 million bushels would be harvested so long as the weather co-operated. Famed sportscaster Foster Hewitt was in town to be the master of ceremonies at the official opening of the new Winnipeg stadium located behind Polo Park. The provincial government passed an order-in-council to virtually wipe out rent control.
