Free Press Head Start for Aug. 13

Good morning.

A regional plan meant to help Winnipeg and 17 surrounding municipalities collaborate on everything from land use to recreation over the next 30 years is facing intense backlash from those who fear it will dictate where they go and how they get there. Joyanne Pursaga reports.

Sporting a bronze medal around her neck, Skylar Park returned to Winnipeg Monday night after becoming the third Canadian to earn a medal in taekwondo at the Olympic Games — and second Manitoban, joining Dominique Bosshart, who captured bronze in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. Ken Wiebe has the story.

The owner of a vacant, boarded-up William Whyte home says he’s stuck with a building that keeps burning while he waits for the city to approve a demolition permit he applied for months ago.

A fire Saturday at 362 Manitoba Ave. was the fourth one at the building since March. It was brief and caused no injuries.

The owner applied for a demolition permit in May, with hopes of tearing down the home and selling the land. He’s been waiting to hear back from the city’s planning, property and development department since. Malak Abas has the story.

On the bright side

The cat came back but it took five years. A volunteer from Winnipeg Lost Cat Assistance, a group that tries to return lost cats to their families, found Fluffy in a Winnipeg neighbourhood — nearly 250 kilometres from the Killarney home where he vanished — earlier this month.

Rosanne Turski, the group member who found Fluffy, said she was shocked to find out how long the senior cat had been missing.

“I’ve never lost a cat, so I couldn’t imagine what someone’s going through, first of all, when they lose a cat, and then searching and all these years go by,” Turski said. Jura McIlraith reports.
