Free Press Head Start for Aug. 15

Good morning.

A grieving family’s call for silver alerts to be distributed on television, radio and wireless devices when vulnerable seniors go missing is gaining the support of the provincial government.

“I’m just hoping it’s going to happen,” said Britt Moberg, whose elderly father Earl Moberg has not been seen since last December, when he wandered into northeast Winnipeg alone and disoriented from his late-stage dementia. Tyler Searle reports.

But according to a recent CFIB survey, Winnipeg is now the undisputed Canadian champion of patio permitting. Martin Cash has the story.

You can see the ancient tooth for yourself under a microscope at Morden’s Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre, and read more here.

On Aug. 15, 1964: The Winnipeg Free Press reported in Thompson, the prairie region supervisor for the United Steelworkers of America said that the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers was behind the trouble and mob scenes in town prior to the official announcement of the strike earlier in the week. In Winnipeg outside the Labour Temple, 50 members of various unions with offices in the building refused to cross a picket line made up of members of Local 342, Office Employees International Union, walking in support of Faith Smith, who voted to strike against the Carpenters’ Union.
