Premier Heather Stefanson is expected to join Mayor Brian Bowman and federal officials this morning to confirm a $500-million deal between the provincial and federal governments and the City of Winnipeg to fund Phase 2 of upgrades to the North End sewage treatment plant. Dan Lett reports.

A former member of Parliament known for her ability to bridge partisan divides and her commitment to the community has been appointed Manitoba’s next lieutenant-governor. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that Anita Neville, 80, will succeed current Lt.-Gov. Janice Filmon, who has held the vice-regal position for more than seven years. Danielle Da Silva has the story.

On Aug. 16, 1933: The Winnipeg Free Press reported suspects in the kidnapping of Chicago speculator John Factor evaded a cordon of 200 armed officers, escaping in a hail of bullets with the ransom. The decline in wheat prices was halted in Winnipeg; confidence in the market was restored by fixing the minimum futures prices here, but the move by the grain exchange to protect western farmers was seen as the most drastic one taken in many years.
