Free Press Head Start for Aug. 17, 2026

Good morning.

Following the Winnipeg Sea Bears championship win over the weekend, sports reporter Taylor Allen caught up with hometown hero Simon Hildebrandt, who was the player to cap off the franchise’s latest and greatest chapter.

In case you missed it, Carol Sanders has the scoop on the AI weapons scanners at Health Sciences Centre. The scanners have detected close to 2,000 items since they were installed at Manitoba’s largest hospital. From March 6, 2025 to the beginning of this month, a total of 1,973 items had been flagged by the scanners and identified for further review, Shared Health said this week.

On the bright side

Growing up with ties to the community of Manitou, Gillian Potvin has found great inspiration in the traces of Nellie McClung’s legacy.

The 39-year-old has spent nearly a decade channelling that inspiration back into the community by being a key part of the Nellie McClung Museum of Canada’s marketing and events planning since it opened at 55 Main St. in the southern Manitoba town in 2017.

Potvin grew up in St. Adolphe and inherited her admiration for the author and social advocate from her mom, who came from Manitou, where McClung lived most of her life. Tiago Resko has the story of Potvin’s volunteerism.
