COVID-19 crisis: Premier Brian Pallister and Dr. Brent Roussin, the province’s chief public health officer, are holding a news conference on a “pandemic response system” at noon. On Aug. 19, 1938: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that heavy gale-force winds reaching 60 miles per hour hit Winnipeg, knocking down telephone poles, severing power lines, and paralyzing traffic temporarily. U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt’s gave a speech in Kingston, Ont., in which he pledged the United States would not stand idly by if domination of Canadian soil were threatened; his words were widely noted throughout the British Empire. The feeling in Ottawa was one of profound appreciation for the president’s speech. The comedy team of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy was broken up by an announcement from the actors’ employers, Hall Roach Studios, that Laurel’s contract had been terminated.
