The Winnipeg Police Service’s high-tech EC120B Colibri helicopter has again become a political hot potato as the fall civic election campaign begins to heat up. Critics concerned about police spending and tactics have renewed calls for the chopper to be permanently grounded, but the WPS is again trying to make a case for its effectiveness. On Aug. 19, 1963: The Winnipeg Free Press reported prime minister Lester Pearson warned residents of Quebec they could be overrun by an “invasion” of American culture and capital if the province were to separate from Canada. In the U.K., experts from Scotland Yard studied 16 sets of fingerprints found at a farm hideout used 11 days earlier by the great train robbery gang, who had made off with $7.8 million in loot.
