On Aug. 19, 1963: The Winnipeg Free Press reported prime minister Lester Pearson warned residents of Quebec they could be overrun by an “invasion” of American culture and capital if the province were to separate from Canada. In the U.K., experts from Scotland Yard studied 16 sets of fingerprints found at a farm hideout used 11 days earlier by the great train robbery gang, who had made off with $7.8 million in loot.
