Purple is for grief: Mayor Brian Bowman will launch the Purple Ribbon Campaign at noon today at City Hall to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a substance-related death. The purple ribbon acknowledges the grief felt and remembers those who have died or have a permanent injury as a result of an overdose.

On Aug. 2, 1954: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a crash near Sioux Lookout between two trains resulted in the deaths of both trains’ engineers; a fast freight train from the west smashed head-on into a standing CN Continental Limited passenger train from Montreal. The Duke of Edinburgh came to Manitoba for a one-hour visit on his way to the British Empire Games in Vancouver.
