On this date

On Aug. 2, 1941: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the “grandpappy of all thunderstorms” hit Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Electric company’s schedules were majorly delayed. Winnipeggers walked home in their bare feet, having tied their shoes around their necks, while others slipped in puddles, wrung out their shirts, and refused seats on the streetcar owning to being soaked. The meteorological bureau reported that 65 mm of water had fallen, mostly within a two-hour period. Manitoba’s total for infantile paralysis — more commonly known as polio — reached 224 cases. Other communicable diseases reported in Winnipeg during the week included chickenpox, diphtheria, measles, mumps, scarlet fever, tuberculosis and whooping cough.
