Three people are in hospital after another serious crash yesterday at a highway intersection near Carberry, Man., where 17 seniors were killed in June. Provincial officials say they intend to refresh the rumble strips and pavement markings at the intersection and improve signage.

On the bright side
546796 Architecture of Winnipeg has turned girders into giggles at one of Toronto’s busiest intersections. They won a design competition that has added three costumed boom trucks at one of the underpasses of the Gardiner Expressway. Alan Small has the story of how a local firm brought beauty to a concrete jungle.

On Aug. 2, 1941: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the “grandpappy of all thunderstorms” hit Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Electric company’s schedules were majorly delayed. Winnipeggers walked home in their bare feet, having tied their shoes around their necks, while others slipped in puddles, wrung out their shirts, and refused seats on the streetcar owning to being soaked. The meteorological bureau reported that 65 mm of water had fallen, mostly within a two-hour period. Manitoba’s total for infantile paralysis — more commonly known as polio — reached 224 cases. Other communicable diseases reported in Winnipeg during the week included chickenpox, diphtheria, measles, mumps, scarlet fever, tuberculosis and whooping cough.
