Trudeau, O’Toole in town: Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole are both making federal election campaign announcements in Winnipeg this morning. The prime minister will make an announcement regarding the Liberal plan for “a safe return to work and school” at the Food Fare in Crestview at 8:45 a.m. The Conservative leader will make a “major announcement” at Bison Transport at 10 a.m. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh will visit Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan, where unmarked graves were found at the site of a former residential school. Border to remain closed: Restrictions barring Canadians from non-essential travel to the U.S. by land have been extended to Sept. 21, even though U.S. travellers are allowed to enter Canada. The restrictions were set to expire at 11:01 p.m. CT tonight. READ MORE

On Aug. 20, 1976: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Johannesburg, South African industrialists called for sweeping improvements in the political, living and employment conditions in the rioting Black townships that supplied their labour force. The U.S. sent two squadrons of fighter jets to South Korea as the bodies of two service members killed by North Korean guards were flown home. The Canadian Union for Public Employees faced a countrywide strike from stenographers working in the union’s offices after it refused to raise their wages.
