St. Boniface soil: The provincial government knew soil at some St. Boniface homes was contaminated with heavy metals weeks earlier than previously stated, the Free Press has learned. Sustainable Development Minister Rochelle Squires had blamed media rules that govern byelections for the delay in disclosing test results, but an advisory note was sent to her more than two weeks before that blackout period began. Anti-poverty plan: Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos will unveil a strategy intended to decrease national poverty rates to historic lows in Vancouver today. Local MP Dan Vandal is holding a related news conference at the Barbara Mitchell Family Resource Centre at noon.

Conversation on crime: River Heights-Fort Garry candidate Garth Steek is holding a public safety forum at the River Heights Community Centre at 7 p.m. The former city councillor says a meth crisis has led to a dramatic surge in crime across the city and the ward has been plagued with “car vandalism, garage break-ins and home invasions.”

On Aug. 21, 1969: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Queen, U.S. president Richard Nixon, and three Apollo 11 astronauts could be making visits to Manitoba in July 1970 for the province’s centennial.
