Ethics committee convenes: Opposition MPs on the House of Commons ethics committee will move to invite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and others to testify about the ethics report on his handling of the SNC-Lavalin affair, but the Liberals — who hold a majority on the committee — are likely to block the bid. On Aug. 21, 1975: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Winnipeg city councillors had voted themselves a hefty pay increase, amounting to as much as 100 per cent for the deputy mayor; basic salaries for councillors were raised from $5,700 annually to $6,555. The move came as a surprise, without prior public notice. A bitter strike by mail workers was possible as early as mid-September. A 10-week-old child was Manitoba’s “absolutely confirmed” second case of western equine encephalitis; the child received treatment and recovered. READ MORE
