On Aug. 21, 1945: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the first Allied occupation troops in Japan were set to land near Tokyo within a week. In Peterborough, Ont., Pte. J. Galaher of Windsor faced a high treason court-martial, but tight security and no comment from military officials prevented information surrounding his case from becoming public knowledge; Canadian officers in London said it was the first time in two world wars they had heard of a Canadian being charged with high treason.
