On Aug. 22, 1985: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that in Manchester, England, 54 people died when a Boeing 737 bound for Greece with 137 people aboard caught fire during takeoff. In Vancouver, prime minister Brian Mulroney condemned South African president P.W. Botha’s position on apartheid, saying Canada would take tougher measures to demonstrate its opposition to the racist regime. A Winnipeg judge said people convicted of impaired driving should be issued red licence plates for their vehicles identifying them as drunks. READ MORE
