On Dec. 22, 1924: The Manitoba Free Press reported Britain’s first air dreadnought, the most powerful single-engined plane in the world and measuring 54 feet long and 88 feet from wingtip to wingtip, made its first flight. In Ottawa on a tour of the British Empire, Sir Frederick Field paid tribute to sailors and navy during the First World War; his remarks were echoed by prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King and Sir Robert Borden, Canada’s wartime prime minister. The president of the British association agricultural section told the Free Press during a stop in Winnipeg that the progress made by farmers in western Canada was “simply astounding.” Search our archives for more here.
