Your forecast: Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement on “widespread smoke” from forest fires that has drifted into Winnipeg. In his latest column, Dan Lett says it’s nothing like being near the source of the smoke. There will be a mix of sun and cloud today, with a high of 29 C and humidex of 33, the air becoming hazy this afternoon because of the smoke and the risk of a thunderstorm this afternoon. READ MORE

On Aug. 24, 1999: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitoba premier Gary Filmon wanted to cut the number of provincial ridings from 57 to 51, a cut that would leave six MLAs looking for jobs when the next election came. Teens took part in the Manitoba High School Rodeo. In Winnipeg, the landmark Eaton’s store downtown faced closure, along with the chain’s 63 other locations across the country, after an Ontario Superior Court judge appointed a receiver and approved liquidation of T.
