Aboriginal spokespeople in Manitoba had previously called for the resignation of the inquiry’s chief commissioner, Marion Buller, but on Thursday Buller called the forum “nothing less than wonderful.” Ben Waldman reports. Leisure Guide registration: Here’s a reminder for the many people who have previously missed the city’s Leisure Guide registration. It was announced Thursday that registration begins Tuesday for swimming lessons, and on Wednesday for all other activities.
Louise Bridge closed: Both the northbound and southbound directions of the Louise Bridge from Nairn Avenue to Sutherland Avenue, will be completely closed to traffic for bridge maintenance today. The city hopes the bridge will reopen to traffic on Saturday.

On Aug. 25, 1987: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that eight residents of a West End boarding house, including a blind epilectic man, were forced onto the street after the landlord changed all the locks and threw everyone out, according to one of the residents. The Canadian Wheat Board was losing sales due to an ongoing rail workers’ strike, while the federal government was giving both sides in the rail dispute four days to settle the strike. Due to deadline pressures, the newspaper did not review the concert headlined by The Cult on the previous night, which featured Guns N’ Roses as the opening act in their first appearance in Winnipeg; however, a review did run in the paper on Aug. 26.
