What’s happening today

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is arriving in Canada today, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will host him on a tour of a military radar site in Cambridge Bay, Nvt. It will be the first time any NATO chief has visited Canada’s Arctic.

The family of Danielle Dawn Ballantyne, a 36-year-old mother whose body was found in a Point Douglas apartment on Monday and whose death police think is linked to three serious assaults in the same area, is mourning her loss. “Losing her is very hard. She was the rock of our family,” says her sister. Chris Kitching reports.

On Aug. 25, 1954: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the French Assembly had rejected a European army treaty between it and the other five countries of “Little Europe.” U.S. president Dwight Eisenhower said the creation of a mighty military reserve as a bulwark against communism would be the top priority on his 1954 legislative program. In Calgary, the Stampeders’ quarterback Eddie LeBaron was expected to knock the Blue Bombers off their undefeated pedestal in their coming game. Search our archives for more here.
