‘Will not stay silent’: A rally organized by activists and labour organizers is happening outside a former Nygard property on Notre Dame Avenue at 4 p.m. Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard, 79, is the subject of two lawsuits related to alleged sexual abuse. “It is time that Winnipeg comes together to stand up against Peter Nygard’s legacy of sexual violence and to stand in solidarity with all those affected in Winnipeg and around the world,” organizers posted on social media. China won’t budge: Foreign Affairs Minister François-Philippe Champagne urged China to release two detained Canadian men during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Tuesday. Their arrests are seen as retaliation for Canada’s arrest of a Huawei executive. Today, Beijing said it still insists Canada must make the first move to end the impasse. “The Canadian side is well aware of the crux of the problem and should immediately take effective measures to correct the mistakes and create conditions for the bilateral relationship to get back on track,” a foreign ministry spokesperson said. Strengthening storm: Laura is expected to be upgraded to a “catastrophic” Category 4 hurricane as the storm heads over the Gulf of Mexico towards Texas and Louisiana. More than half a million people were ordered to evacuate an area of the Gulf Coast Tuesday. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE
