If you find you’re often misplacing treasured items (or even your car keys), take heart from this story by Joshua Frey-Sam about one artifact that is finding its rightful place.

An antique hunter who found a mysterious silverware case in Toronto discovered it was originally awarded to the vice-president of the Winnipeg Victorias following their Stanley Cup win in 1896. He is donating it to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

“To have something that isn’t a piece of equipment, but is a piece of the history, is significant,” says HHOF archives manager Craig Campbell. Read more here.

On Aug. 26, 1964: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that five people, all believed to be teenagers, were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and car on Highway 9 near Gimli; the driver of the truck survived. At the Democratic national convention in Atlantic City, Ga., nearly all of the all-white official delegation from Mississippi walked out rather than sign a loyalty pledge; members of the predominantly Black Mississippi Freedom Democratic party, who sought to unseat the pro-segregation old guard, took their place.
