Chain reaction to basketball boycott: The NBA’s board of governors will meet after Wednesday’s playoff games were postponed in the wake of a police shooting in Wisconsin and the fatal shooting of two protesters. The Toronto Raptors are scheduled to play in one of today’s playoff games, but a decision on those games has not been made. All three NHL playoff games were played Wednesday, while Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer and the WNBA postponed some or all games. The Canadian Press reports. READ MORE

Safe schools rally: Safe September MB — a collective of teachers, parents and other community members — is holding a rally and march at the legislature at 5 p.m. They are demanding the provincial government revise its back-to-school plan to ensure two metres of physical distancing and provide remote learning options. Trump caps off convention: U.S. President Donald Trump will close the Republican National Convention with a speech tonight. His daughter Ivanka Trump will introduce him, and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is expected to speak. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

Hurricane hits: Laura hit the Gulf Coast as a Category 4 hurricane early this morning and has since been downgraded to Category 2. The hurricane is the seventh named storm to hit the U.S. this year, setting a record for U.S. landfalls before the end of August. The Associated Press reports. READ MORE

Execution on hold: Friday’s scheduled execution of a man by the U.S. government is on hold after a judge ruled early today a prescription for the lethal injection drug must be obtained. Hours earlier, the government executed the only Indigenous person on federal death row. There have now been more federal executions this year than in the previous 56 years combined.
