Concerts, carnival amid COVID-19: Several large events are happening in Winnipeg this weekend, even as provincial health officials are set to announce tougher pandemic restrictions. The Red River Exhibition’s Fall Fair begins today. The Burt Block Party is happening inside tonight. On Aug. 27, 1957: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that the Soviet Union announced it had performed the first successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile. Winnipeg city engineers were set to cut up the pavement around the new post office on Garry Street because its sprinkler system was not connected to a water supply. In Los Angeles, oil paintings were disqualified from being shown in galleries when it was revealed their creator was a parrot, not a human being.
