On Aug. 29, 1925: The Manitoba Free Press reported the city’s finance committee strongly opposed that manufacturer E.W. Backus should gain control of the Seven Sisters Falls power site as a condition of establishing a pulp and paper mill in greater Winnipeg, sending word of their position to the mayor, the prime minister, and the federal minister of the interior. Mayor Ralph Webb denounced reports Backus sought control of the site as “propaganda.” A woman’s 26th birthday party picnic held near the Red River was interrupted by police; nearby residents alleged the guests had been drinking too heavily.
