On Aug. 31, 1929: The Manitoba Free Press reported that residents in Malonton, west of Winnipeg Beach, hastily constructed a fireguard to protect against a forest fire that stretched 15 miles, from Narcissus to Malonton. The situation was still serious at Berens River, Rennie and Flin Flon; all four communities were faced with destruction unless heavy rains came to the assistance of forestry rangers battling the blazes. The Free Press crop report said the cutting of wheat was complete in Manitoba and was well underway in Saskatchewan and Alberta; threshing in Manitoba was general and would be general in the other provinces within a week.
