A newspaper’s commitment: Free Press Editor Paul Samyn joined Indigenous and Métis elders on Thursday, along with 200 youths wearing yellow T-shirts emblazoned with “We are all Treaty People.” Samyn told the gathering the Free Press editorial page will permanently include the words: “Published since 1872 on Treaty 1 territory and the homelands of the Métis.” Ashley Prest reports on this historic recognition. Fewer asylum seekers: The number of asylum-seekers crossing the border through places such as Emerson and Gretna has fallen considerably since the winter. Only 63 were intercepted in June, compared with monthly totals of more than 140 in February through April. Carol Sanders reports. READ MORE

Medals for Manitoba: Manitoba significantly boosted its medal output at the Canada Summer Games with an eight-medal haul Thursday, including a flashy gold in the female 400-metre final by 18-year-old Victoria Tachinski. The Winnipeg runner blitzed the competition with a time of 54.04 seconds on the University of Manitoba track. Credit the dedication and teamwork of Tachinski and other Manitoba female athletes for orchestrating the host province’s most memorable day so far at the Games. READ MORE
