📖 New York author (and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner) Colson Whitehead, whose latest novel Cool Machine was published July 21, will be at WAG-Qaumajuq (300 Memorial Blvd.) tonight at 7 p.m., where he’ll be joined in conversation by Winnipeg Swampy Cree author David A. Robertson.
🚀 Earlier in the day, at 10 a.m., Other Places Books is slated to open its doors at 436 Graham Ave., just a few doors down from mainstay Bison Books (424 Graham Ave.). The bookstore’s focus will be science fiction and fantasy.

On Aug. 4, 1925: The Manitoba Free Press reported in Victoria, B.C., two masked men entered Spencer’s department store, overpowered the night watchman, and then robbed the safe in the main office of between $16,000 and $18,000. In Winnipeg, John R. Lamb, general manager of the Bank of Toronto, told a gathering at the Hotel Fort Garry that conditions in the west and in Canada generally had improved since a year earlier and the outlook for farming was good.
