On Aug. 8, 1961: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a three-month-old baby had died following a single-vehicle collision on Highway 5 near Gilbert Plains. The child was injured after a tire blew out on the family vehicle, causing it to roll over into a ditch. Manitoba’s plan to create an economic research council for farm marketing and economics was turned down by two other provinces, announced Agriculture Minister George Hutton. In Washington, auto makers were told they must start equipping cars with devices to control exhaust fumes. Prime minister John Diefenbaker was fishing while on holiday in Prince Albert National Park.
