On Dec. 10, 1919: The Manitoba Free Press reported that the Canadian Mint might reduce the fineness of the alloy used in coins, because the price of silver had risen so much that the actual value of the metal in some coins exceeded the coins’ face value. In Ontario, the provincial department of health threatened to quarantine the entire city of Toronto unless municipal officials complied with a directive to make vaccinations against smallpox compulsory for all the city’s residents.
