On the bright side

For five years, the Filipino-led 204 Neighbourhood Watch has been helping newcomers navigate life in Winnipeg and partnering with the Winnipeg Police Service, Canadian Red Cross, Canadian Blood Services, and the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, often bridging the gaps in social services and educating the public. The group will continue doing its important work, but now with a new name: 204 Volunteers Caring Manitobans in Action. Shelley Cook has the story.

On Dec. 13, 1951: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the first electricity generated by the $25-million Pine Falls hydroelectric power plant began flowing, after three years of construction. Grain was still moving in great quantities down the Great Lakes at a time when seasonal navigation was usually closed. U.S. president Harry Truman vowed to clear out “wrongdoers” in government, indicating he would set up a special agency to root out corruption. Search our archives for more here.
