Free Press Head Start for Dec. 14

Good morning!

It was an evening of close calls last night. The provincial byelection in Kirkfield Park turned out to be a political nail-biter, with Progressive Conservative candidate Kevin Klein winning the seat. And though the Jets held an early lead against the visiting Vegas Golden Knights, Winnipeg ultimately lost 6-5.

Tyree Cayer appeared destined for big things after starring in Winnipeg’s high school football league, where he conquered defences and set a scoring record that still stands a decade later. After injuries disrupted his career and he lost an aunt who was like a best friend, Cayer, 28, fell on hard times and was experiencing homelessness when he was fatally stabbed at the downtown Millennium Library on Sunday. Chris Kitching has the story.

On Dec. 14, 1931: The Winnipeg Free Press reported European seas were hit by gales that severely disrupted shipping and wrecked vessels, killing as many as 60 people. The new Japanese government, in its first official act, abandoned the gold standard, becoming the fifteenth nation to do so. Former heavyweight champ Jack Dempsey, in Winnipeg for a boxing match as part of his comeback campaign to regain the title, said it was a tough grind getting back into fighting shape, but added, “I think I will soon be ready to take any of them on.” Search our archives for more here.
