On Dec. 15, 1960: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the city police commission met in an emergency session to begin immediate study of an estimated $900,000 worth of repairs and renovations to the Rupert Avenue police headquarters; the repairs were made necesary by a rejection by Winnipeg ratepayers of a $4,200,000 bylaw to build a new police headquarters. Confusion hung over Addis Ababa after a coup removed Ethiopia’s King Haile Selassi from power and installed his son, Crown Prince Asfa Wassan, as ruler. A Cessna that went missing in a snowstorm en route to Brandon was reportedly spotted near Indian Head, Sask., and the RCMP and RCAF were involved in the search.
