A U.S.-French satellite that will map almost all of the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers has rocketed into orbit.

A landslide at a campground in Malaysia has killed 18 people, and it’s believed another 15 are missing.

On the bright side

A new treaty knowledge centre called The Agowiidiwinan Centre opened at The Forks Thursday. The space, in what was formerly Muddy Waters restaurant, features information panels, interactive tools and self-guided tours. Shauna Turnley reports.

On Dec. 16, 1972: The Winnipeg Free Press reported a resolution on raising the minimum wage from $2.50 an hour encountered “heavy going” at the Manitoba New Democratic Party policy convention. Some residential areas in Thompson were doomed to be flooded if the province proceeded with its plans to divert the Churchill River.
