Timing of trial uncertain: The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday evening to impeach a president for the third time in history. Later, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she wouldn’t send the two articles against Donald Trump to the Republican-controlled Senate until Democrats get assurances a trial in the upper chamber will be fair. What to watch: Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are set to meet today to discuss plans for Trump’s trial, The Associated Press reports. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will make a statement on the “precedent-breaking” impeachment on the floor of the Senate later this morning.

Top Trump ally: The day after he voted against impeachment, Republican Rep. Mark Meadows announced early today he won’t seek re-election. Meadows is considered one of Trump’s key allies in Congress. READ MORE

On Dec. 19, 1955: The Winnipeg Free Press reported on the impending official first day of winter even though the city was shivering already with overnight lows dropping to 33 below Fahrenheit (-36 C) and Vancouver and Victoria, B.C. were dealing with snowstorms. The provincial government was in the middle of a beer probe, examining how the cost of suds in Manitoba compared to prices in other provinces. A stag party in London, England made international news after it was discovered a belly dancer wearing only a feather and silver body paint did a show for about 100 postal workers in a stately government building.
