On Dec. 2, 1958: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a new emergency number for the greater Winnipeg area, 999, would be introduced in July 1959. Premier Duff Roblin was set to meet with Winnipeg mayor Stephen Juba to discuss a multimillion-dollar plan for the city. Downtown parking meter rates were set to double, from 12 minutes for a penny to only six minutes for a penny. A fire at a parochial grade school in Chicago killed 90 people, 87 of them children.
