On Dec. 23, 1994: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that a Winnipeg MP planned to bring a motion before the House of Commons that would require all cigarette lighters to be child-resistant; the motion was spurred by two recent tragedies in which five local children and teenagers died in fires started by children playing with lighters. Crown corporation Manitoba Hazardous Waste Corp. had received $20 million in taxpayer dollars but had still not constructed a waste treatment plant, leading to questions whether the province would ever see a return on its investment.
