On Dec. 29, 1942: The Winnipeg Free Press reported the Red Army developed a pincer movement against Rostov, and Soviet forces all but surrounded Kotelnikovksi, the chief German base southwest of Stalingrad. British submarines sank four ships attempting to reinforce German forces in North Africa. In Canada, the death toll in a train crash at Almonte, Ont., was revised to 35, with only two persons still unidentified; the list of injured people was increased from 117 to 155.
