Free Press Head Start for Dec. 7

Good morning!

An extreme cold warning is in effect for Winnipeg. That is officially “frostbite in minutes” territory, so bundle up.

In other news, in Germany, 3,000 officers conducted searches at 130 sites in 11 of Germany’s 16 states, resulting in the arrests of 25 people on the suspicion of planning an armed coup.

And in the U.S., a case before the Supreme Court could affect the future of voting in that country.

On the bright side

Jennifer Ballantyne, executive chef of Manoomin Restaurant, inside the new Wyndham Garden (Odé Aki) hotel owned by Long Plain First Nation, was inspired by foods she grew up with when creating the menu. “Food was always a family affair,” writes Eva Wasney. “Her uncles fished and hunted wild game — such as moose, deer and rabbit — the grandkids picked berries and the matriarchs turned it all into life-affirming soups, stews and jams. Tea and bannock were fixtures of prayer meetings and gospel gatherings.” A Red Seal chef, Ballantyne says: “I wanted to dial in on homestyle favourites, what I was used to growing up, and utilizing ingredients that were familiar for me as a child, while still trying to stay within the realm of traditional and modern.”
