Increase in deaths, infections: The death toll in mainland China has increased to 908, with 3,062 new infections, bringing the total to more than 40,000. More people have died from the virus than SARS, the epidemic that killed 774 people in 2002 and 2003. READ MORE

Trudeau to meet troops: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will visit Canadian troops in Kuwait and also meet with Prime Minister Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah. At the Oscars: Parasite, a South Korean film by Bong Joon Ho, became the first non-English language film to win best picture in the 92-year history of the Oscars Sunday night. The film also won the Academy Awards for best director, best international film and best screenplay. On Feb. 10, 1967: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Manitoba premier Duff Roblin told the legislature that the Canadian Constitution prevented him from imposing “fairer ways” of taxation than the impending provincial sales tax. Winnipeg was still in the running to be the site of the federal Conservative Party leadership race. In London, Soviet premier Alexei Kosygin addressed Parliament, proposing a treaty of friendship, co-operation and non-aggression with Britain.
