On Feb. 11, 1972: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that author Clifford Irving and his research assistant admitted to U.S. authorities that they had never met billionaire Howard Hughes, the subject of their purported “autobiography.” In Winnipeg, plans for a multimillion-dollar Bank of Nova Scotia development at Portage and Main were announced; the building could spark the development of a concourse and a walkway, it was reported.
