On Feb. 12, 1982: The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Henry Fonda was the sentimental favourite for an Oscar for On Golden Pond. In Winnipeg, some lawyers were fuming over changes to the Manitoba Law Society’s rules governing advertising. The province intervened in an attempt by the town council in Rivers, Man., to deny welfare to a man and his family and have them return to Ontario. In Ottawa, an attempt by the Progressive Conservatives to force a non-confidence vote failed.
